چکیده

This paper shows how two different theoretical approaches to model innovation adoption, network threshold modeling and random utility modeling, both result in discrete-time hazard models, a popular statistical modeling approach to study innovation adoption and diffusion. The paper emphasizes the need for careful situational analysis prior to model building and illustrates the point with the diffusion oftetracycline, the drug analyzed by Coleman, Katz and Menzel in Medical Innovation. The situational analysis identifies marketing effort rather social contagion as a likely driver ofadoption. A new statistical analysis ofthe Medical Innovation data set, expanded with newly collected advertising data, support this alternative explanation for the wellknown Medical Innovation results.

A Two-Stage Model of Innovation Adoption with Partial Observability: Model Development and Application

We show how one can specify micro-level hazard models of adoption that separately represent the awareness and evaluation/choice stage of the adoption decision process even when one observes only the final outcome, i.e. adoption or not. These models can be derived from random utility theory. Using a small simulation study, we show that the two-stage partial observability specification retrieves ...

Exploring associations between micro-level models of innovation diffusion and emerging macro-level adoption patterns

A micro-level agent-based model of innovation diffusion was developed that explicitly combines (a) an individual's perception of the advantages or relative utility derived from adoption, and (b) social influence from members of the individual's social network. The micro-model was used to simulate macro-level diffusion patterns emerging from different configurations of micro-model parameters. Mi...

Effects of integrating physical and financial flows through a closed-loop supply chain network under uncertain demand and return

The impact of financial challenges on the profit of a supply chain, have caused the researcher to model the supply chain network by considering the operational and financial dimensions. Also, the establishment of a closed loop supply chain (CLSC) network has a high effect on economic profit. So, the purpose of this study is to design a stochastic closed loop supply chain network by considering ...

Revisiting Models of Influence Spread in Social Networks

In many settings, network structure is used to inform difficult decisions, such as how promotional events should be targeted to encourage widespread adoption of a product, or predict complex phenomena, such as how contagions will spread through social circles to create an epidemic. Though seemingly unrelated, modeling these phenomena using networks reveals that they are strikingly similar. Rese...

On Calibration and Application of Logit-Based Stochastic Traffic Assignment Models

There is a growing recognition that discrete choice models are capable of providing a more realistic picture of route choice behavior. In particular, influential factors other than travel time that are found to affect the choice of route trigger the application of random utility models in the route choice literature. This paper focuses on path-based, logit-type stochastic route choice models, i...
